Software and data
ERP
Enterprise resource planning: a single system covering several business functions at once, such as stock, orders, purchasing, finance and scheduling.
What eRP means in practice
The idea is that the functions share one set of data, so an order placed reduces stock, triggers purchasing and appears in the accounts without anyone rekeying it. For a business that genuinely runs on several interlocking processes, that is a real gain.
For most small businesses an ERP is heavier than the problem. The implementations that fail tend to fail because the business had to change how it works to suit the system, at considerable cost, to solve something two connected tools would have handled. The honest test is whether the pain is really in one process, in which case fix that one, or genuinely spread across all of them.
