AI optimisation
AI optimisation (AIO) for Google AI Overviews
We provide AI optimisation (AIO) for small businesses that want to appear in Google’s AI answers. That covers the AI Overviews shown at the top of many searches and the conversational AI Mode. The work includes content that answers questions directly, clear page structure, structured data and the trust signals Google uses to choose its sources. You get your business cited in the answer rather than buried under it.
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
- Built on solid SEO foundations
- Tracked in Search Console
What AI optimisation means for Google search
For many searches, Google now shows an AI-written summary above the usual results, with links to the pages it drew on. Its AI Mode goes further, answering follow-up questions in a conversation. For a lot of questions, that summary is the first thing a customer reads, and the businesses cited in it get the attention.
AI optimisation, often shortened to AIO, is the work of making your pages the ones Google chooses to cite. It is not a separate trick bolted onto SEO. Google’s AI features draw on the same index as ordinary search, so a page that is not crawled, trusted and relevant is very unlikely to be quoted. AIO builds on good SEO and then shapes content so it can be lifted into an answer cleanly.
AIO is one part of our wider SEO services in Nottingham.
Included in AI optimisation work
- A review of which of your target searches currently show AI Overviews, and who they cite
- Clear, direct answers near the top of each page, followed by the detail
- Question-led headings that match how people actually phrase their searches
- FAQ content written from real customer questions rather than invented ones
- Structured data describing your business, services, prices, reviews and FAQs
- Author and business details that show who is behind the content and why they know the subject
- Facts kept consistent across your site, Google Business Profile and listings
- Technical checks so every important page is crawlable, fast and indexed
- Search Console tracking of the queries and pages that gain or lose visibility
How Google chooses what to cite
Google has not published a formula, but the pattern in what AI Overviews cite is consistent. They favour pages that answer the question plainly and early, that are well structured, that come from a source Google already trusts on the subject, and that agree with other reliable sources.
That favours businesses that genuinely know their trade and say so clearly. A heating engineer who explains what a boiler service includes, what it costs and how often it is needed, in plain language, is a better source than a page of keywords. The work is making sure that expertise is written down, structured and easy for Google to find.
- Direct answers before the detail
- Pages structured with clear headings and lists
- Real expertise, with a named business behind it
- Consistent facts wherever your business appears
What AIO can and cannot do
Nobody controls which sources Google’s AI uses, and the answers change as Google adjusts its systems. Anyone promising a guaranteed place in AI Overviews is promising something they cannot deliver. What we can do is make your pages the strongest candidates, and measure whether it is working.
It is also worth being clear that AI answers do not replace the click for most local services. Someone who wants a tree felled or a boiler fixed still needs to choose a business and get in touch. Being named in the answer puts you on the shortlist, and the rest of your site still has to win the enquiry.
For ChatGPT, Perplexity and the other AI assistants outside Google, see our page on generative engine optimisation (GEO).
Find out whether AI search mentions you
The free review checks the main searches for your trade and area, shows you which of them trigger AI answers and who gets cited, and sets out what it would take for your business to be among them.

What is AIO?
AIO stands for AI optimisation. In this context it means improving your content so Google’s AI features, AI Overviews and AI Mode, are more likely to cite your site in their answers. It builds on normal SEO rather than replacing it.
What is the difference between AIO and GEO?
The terms overlap and are used loosely. We use AIO for Google’s own AI answers and GEO, generative engine optimisation, for standalone assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. The groundwork is largely the same, but the assistants use different sources and crawlers, so some of the work differs.
Do AI Overviews reduce traffic to my site?
For simple informational questions they can, because the answer is given on the results page. For local services the effect is smaller, since people still need to choose and contact a business. Being cited in the overview helps make sure that choice includes you.
Can I track whether my site appears in AI Overviews?
Partly. Google Search Console includes AI Overview appearances within its normal performance figures rather than separately, so we combine Search Console data with regular manual checks of your key searches and report what we find.
Do I need AIO if my SEO is already good?
Good SEO does most of the work. AIO adds the finishing layer: direct answers, question-led structure and structured data that make your content easy to quote. For a site with solid foundations it is usually a modest amount of work with a clear benefit.
