Websites and hosting
Managed hosting
Web hosting where the provider also handles the updates, backups, security and monitoring of the server, rather than only renting you space on it.
What managed hosting means in practice
Unmanaged hosting is a bare server and a login. It is cheaper because the work of keeping it patched, backed up and reachable is yours, and that work does not stop existing when nobody is doing it. Most sites that get compromised are running software that has been out of date for a long time.
The distinction worth clarifying with any host is who is responsible for what: the server, the software on it, the site itself, and the backups of each. Those four can sit with different parties, and the gap between them is where problems live. Ask specifically whether backups of the site are included, and whether anyone has ever restored one.
