Endpoint
Any device a person uses to reach company systems: a desktop, laptop, tablet or phone. It is the industry word for a computer.
What endpoint means in practice
The term exists because the boundary of a business network stopped being the building. When staff work from home, from a van or from a client site, the thing worth protecting is the device rather than the office, and security tooling is priced and licensed per endpoint as a result.
It matters practically when you compare quotes. A plan priced per user and a plan priced per endpoint are not the same plan: a member of staff with a desktop, a laptop and a work phone is one user and three endpoints. Ask which basis the number uses before comparing, because the difference is routinely large enough to reverse which quote is cheaper.
