Patch management

The routine of testing and applying software and operating system updates across every machine in a business, on a schedule.

What patch management means in practice

Most successful attacks on small businesses use a vulnerability that was fixed months earlier. Patching is unglamorous and it is the single highest-value security control most small businesses are not doing consistently, because it needs someone to own it rather than leaving each user to click Later.

Doing it properly means more than turning automatic updates on. It means knowing which machines exist, staging updates so a bad one does not land on all of them at once, and having a way to see what failed. The machine that never gets patched is almost always the important one: the reception PC that runs the booking system and is never off, or the server nobody wants to reboot.
