IT support and security

Managed IT support

An ongoing service where one provider takes responsibility for keeping a business's computers, servers, email and network working, for a fixed monthly fee.

What managed IT support means in practice

The defining feature is the fee, not the technology. A managed provider is paid the same amount whether you have a quiet month or a terrible one, which means every hour they spend firefighting is an hour of their own margin. That aligns their incentives with yours: it is in their interest to patch the thing before it breaks.

What a plan actually includes varies more than the price does. The things worth confirming in writing are whether on-site visits are included or billed separately, what the response commitment is and whether it is contractual, whether backups are tested rather than merely running, and who owns the licences and the documentation if you leave.
