Responsive design

Building a website so one set of pages rearranges itself to suit any screen size, rather than maintaining a separate mobile site.

What responsive design means in practice

It has been the default approach for over a decade, so a site that is not responsive in 2026 is not merely dated, it is being ranked and served on the basis of its mobile version regardless. Most traffic to a local business site arrives on a phone.

Responsive is a floor rather than a finish. A layout can rearrange correctly and still be unusable on a phone: a phone number that is not tappable, a form with fields too small to hit, a menu that hides the one thing everybody came for. The test is whether someone can complete the main task one-handed at a bus stop, not whether the layout reflows.
