VPN

An encrypted connection that lets a computer outside the office reach systems inside it as though it were on the office network.

What vPN means in practice

A business VPN exists to reach something that only lives in one place: a server, a line-of-business application or a file share that was never moved to the cloud. It is not the same product as the consumer VPNs advertised for privacy, which solve a different problem entirely.

The usual complaint about a VPN is that everything feels slow over it, and the usual cause is that all traffic is being routed through the office including the traffic that has no reason to go there. The other thing worth knowing is that a VPN gives a device the network, so an unmanaged home computer connecting in brings whatever it is carrying with it.
